Malaysia Unmapped

Malaysia Unmapped from Jon Carr on Vimeo.

We spent three weeks traveling in Malaysia and this is the highlight video from our travels in Kaula Lumpur, Cameron Highlands, and Langkawi. The video is a combination of 5D footage and time lapse video. I used an old 24mm Nikon, 24-70mm L 2.8 canon, 50mm 1.4 canon. I also was able to utilize my Kessler Pocket Dolly and I love the product. Wish I would have been able to get the v2 but purchased a little early. I have a few others in the pipeline including Bali, Australia, and New Zealand and hope to roll them out when I have time to catch up.

This is a really nice and clever travelogue Jon. Can I ask how you managed to fit the pocket dolly into your suitcase? The V2 just arrived this week and I've been practising with it - I'm wondering did you use a tripod on any of the tracking shots, or just found an available table.

I've found the movement of my pocket dolly to be a bit wobbly to tell you the truth, and have had to smoothcam pretty much everything I've shot so far - though I did only get it two days ago, so it might just be operator error.

Anyway, just wanted to say that I really love the style of these videos - so refreshing from the usual travel video format. Well done.

Hey Mark,
Thanks so much for checking out the video. It has been fun to put them together. I have a lot of additional footage that I will edit when I get the time.

As for the slider, I have to admit it has been a real challenge to have it along on my travels. I actually don't put it in the suitcase but use the pocket dolly carrying case. I can also get my manfroto tripod in as well. Seems to work.

The use my tripod about 95% of the time with the slider. I would say that about 70% of my shots don't turn out due to wobble or the slider gumming up. I go back and forth about five or six times and hope for something usable. I like the device but wish I had V2 that seems to be better. Seems to take a little practice, so stick with it.

When I was in the states, I built a mini dolly with roller skate bearings and used PVC pipe as track and that worked so well and cost a lot less. It just wasn't practical for my trip.

Anyway, good luck and thanks for checking it out. I should have some good stuff from New Zealand, Thailand, and Cambodia up shortly.

Jon
