Canon 5D Audio Workflow

5D External Audio Tutorial from Jon Carr on Vimeo.

In this tutorial, I walk you through the process of syncing up externally recorded audio with your 5D footage.

I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from my East coast pizza testimonials and one of the main questions people were interested in was how I handled audio. I created this tutorial to explain my process. The workflow is pretty easy but keep in mind there are many ways of handling external audio with the 5D. In the future, I will probably use the Zoom H4n Portable Handy Recorder. Zacuto has some good information on this product.

We used a DVX100 camera to record external audio. The DVX100 has two XLR inputs and on one channel we recorded with a shotgun microphone just below the person being interviewed. On the second channel we used a wired lavalier microphone taped and hidden under the shirt. In post, I picked the best channel and duplicated it to have very clean audio for my interviews.

Jon, you need to duplicate the audio from the 'best channel' considering it was mono to begin with. Btw, have you experimented with changing the time-base to 29.97 during conversion to cineform or whatever other format you use for editing. I did this recently and achieved perfect sync with the audio captured from an XH-A1 in 30p (@ 29.97) mode.

Good point Glen. I should have worded that differently, you are right about mono. I will play around with your method of conversion. There are a lot of ways to do it. I have also heard I can change some of the easy setup settings within Final Cut Pro to avoid this issue all together.

Thanks for the info.

Hello John,

Could you help me with a similar setup?

I will be using my DVX100a to phantom power a pro gun mic and then want to feed back the audio to 5d.
Should I use the phone out from the DVX100 or the line out (and thus be able to use headphones to monitor)?

Is any of these option very wrong that could result in damaging the 5d ?

Was planning to get the H4n but budget does not allow. Leaving in 2 days for a doc shooting.

Many thanks for your help.
